More on a couple of endangered species, plus a new species for Rondeau, etc.

 Earlier this month, I went to Rondeau to try and get some impressive shots of the super moon. I spent a bit of time ahead of the moon rise, exploring other areas, including the Marsh Trail. One of the first things I was able to get photos of was this Merlin keeping an eye on me.

On the trail itself, I encountered a Short-tailed Shrew. It was dead, and that is the most likely way to encounter one. 


A few more living things were noted, and photographed, including Blue Jays, which are migrating through in large numbers....

As the evening progressed, I went out to the east side of the park in anticipation of a large, orange super moon at the horizon. There was a bit of haze at the horizon, so I waited and got this one as it rose a bit.

I went back a couple of days later, with a different camera\lens combination, as the horizon appeared to be clearer. Unfortunately it was quite windy, and I couldn't hold the camera still enough in such dark conditions especially with such a slow shutter speed, and when there is often more atmospheric interference right at the horizon. So the quality of photo I was hoping for wasn't what I got. 
 
Later in the evening, I got this:

It is sharper, of course, but it doesn't look a lot different than a normal full moon. Oh well, I guess I will have to work on my moon rise photography technique and keep trying!

In other park explorations, I managed to see these things:

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are more plentiful, as they are in migration mode. The occasional one may stay the winter at Rondeau.

As the human crowds thin out a bit, deer are more likely to be out and about.

Next is a fruiting capsule of the endangered Nodding Pogonia. It wasn't a great year for this species, as the dryness at a critical time of the summer likely had an impact, as did other factors. For those that did flower and produce a seed capsule, this is what one will find. It is a very small plant to begin with, as one can tell in comparing it to the fallen leaves beside it, and so even extra care had to be made as I searched for evidence of seed production. As the capsule develops, it sits upright, and starts to split along some of the lines, enabling the tiny seeds to disperse with a bit of breeze.

Something I was surprised to encounter was this next little critter. It doesn't have a common name, but is a member of the Tree Hopper family, and its scientific name is Stictocephala basalis. According to iNaturalist, it is the first record for Rondeau and although generally widespread across southern Ontario, is not common at all. When I came across this little rascal, I only had my 100-500mm lens, so had to be creative in getting even a few record shots. Fortunately the lens will focus down to 1 metre at 500mm, so that helped.
Next is a member of the Trametes fungal group, commonly known as the Turkey-tail group.
In spite of the fairly sunny and warm temperatures, butterflies have really dropped off, most likely to that stretch of cold overnight temperatures not long ago.

Next is a photo of a fungus called Destructive Pholiota. The first photo shows it a week later than the following photo, indicating that these fruiting bodies don't last very long.

Salamanders are fairly common across the damper areas of the park, but are seldom seen, especially considering how dry the sloughs are now. This one is likely a Blue-spotted Salamander, but with the genetic research taking place by researchers amongst the salamander group, it might be a hybrid.

Mid to late October is one of my favourite times to search for another endangered species, Red Mulberry. This species occurs in very few places in extreme southern Ontario, being limited primarily to Pelee Island, Point Pelee and in the extreme eastern Niagara Peninsula. Rondeau has a fairly good population, but that may be changing as the forest conditions have changed a little more dramatically in the last few years. I intend to discuss that topic in more detail in a future post. In the meantime, in the last week or so, I have been looking for this species to determine its continued presence at known locations, as well as keeping an eye open for new locations. As a result, I believe I have found at least two, possibly three, new locations. The leaves are much fresher looking this late in the season compared to most other trees. The leaves are quite large, round and have obvious 'drip tips'. These drip tips are helpful in that due to the slight hairiness of the leaves, which can hold moisture, the drip tips allow for a greater falling off of the moisture droplets. The leaves have a fairly symmetrical base, unlike those leaves of somewhat similar looking Basswood leaves.

As mentioned, they retain the green colour later in the season than most other species. All of these Red Mulberry photos were taken in the last week. There are numerous non-biting midges present lately throughout the park, and they often take refuge on the underside of the leaf which this next photo shows.
This species never grows as tall as most of the other species it associates with, so if you see a relatively short tree with a trunk only a few centimetres in diameter, and with lots of large green leaves as described above, it may be a Red Mulberry. A species it can be confused with includes Basswood, a native species, and Northern Catalpa which is often planted in built up areas but can be distributed into forests, so be aware!

Late summer orchids of Rondeau, all are species at risk!

 There are several highlights for botanizing later in the summer. Certainly the main highlight for me is to check on three orchid species that are found at Rondeau, all of which are quite rare in Ontario. One is so rare that its only Canadian location is at Rondeau. Another one is quite restricted, but so very small that the average person would not even see it. The third, and latest flowering one, is rare, but relatively widespread in the park and generally more visible.

 Keen botanists will likely already know the three I am talking about. The first, and rarest one, is the Nodding Pogonia (Triphora trianthophoros). 

Its peak time of flowering is typically the third week of August, although on rare occasions I have seen one or more in flower on even the last day of July. This year I went out into one of its best known locations on August 1, just to see what was happening, and was quite surprised to see several in flower. One even had a double flower!

The tricky thing with this orchid is its flowering strategy. All the buds develop to a certain stage, and then remain as is. It takes a fairly significant drop in the overnight temperature to trigger the buds to open on the morning of the second day following this temperature drop. All the buds that are ready will open, but just for a single day, and it may be a week before the next suitable temperature drop triggers the next set of buds to open.

The weather this August was anything but suitable for this flowering strategy. An overnight temperature would seem suitable, but then the next three nights would see the temperature drop even more! I think the plants were a little confused with this abnormal sequence, and as a result, their flowering was difficult to predict. On more than one occasion I went out expecting, or at least hoping, to see some in flower, but in some cases they flowered the day before and were not worth bothering to photograph. And the next set of buds were not well developed at all. This next photo shows what a single plant looks like, from a distance of about 6", with a 100m macro lens! They can be easily missed, even when one knows exactly what to look for, so I seldom go out unless I am quite sure they will be in flower, and if it is the wrong day, I don't spend much time looking so as to not accidentally step on them.

I do know where some are likely to be found, even if not flowering, and by being extra careful, I managed to find some that were tucked beside a fallen log, and almost impossible to see. This next photo is of a pair of even tinier plants with very undeveloped flower buds, and again, photographed with a 100mm macro lens from a close distance. The plants are merely 4-5 cm high. Even at that, I greatly cropped the photo to get this.

Overall it was one of the poorest years I can remember in my 50+ years of monitoring this endangered orchid. Probably the relatively dry weather at a critical time was partly the cause. However I did manage to get a few photos. These next two were taken in the 3rd week of August window. All were almost pure white, and while I always hope for some with a magenta tinge that I find even more attractive, the second photo is the only one that had even a very slight magenta tinge. Ones with a magenta tinge usually occur towards the end of the flowering season. Oh well, maybe next year.



 After blooming, the seed pods develop, as this next photo shows. Upon ripening, the seed pods will become erect, and start to dry, with the sides of the pod starting to split open so that a slight gust of wind will cause the seeds inside to disperse.

The second orchid I referred to, is about the same size as the previous one, and at least once the flowers open up, will remain open for several days. However for the more common variety of this one, Autumn Coralroot (Corallorhiza odontorhiza) which is also rare, the flowers don't open, but are self-pollinated! The rarer variety, known as Pringle's Coralroot and shown here, has flowers that do open. This first photo shows a group of four plants.

And finally, a 'head-on' view of the lip of a single flower, which is probably only about 4 mm wide.
Not exactly a show piece for the horticultural industry, but an interesting orchid nonetheless, and it is native!

The third, and last orchid to be found flowering at Rondeau is the more common of these three. It is known as Great Plain's Ladies' Tresses (Spiranthes magnicamporum).

I found my first one with a few of the lower flowers starting to open up on September 13.

A couple of days later, there were a few more starting to open.

It is rare that all of the flowers are open at the same time, but sometimes most are. There are other species in the Spiranthes genus that look similar. A couple of the key characteristics of this one is that when in flower, it has a 'fragrance' that I think is similar to hot plastic. But without getting close enough to smell it, a close look shows a slightly yellow/tan colour well inside an open flower. None of the other Spiranthes have this coloration.
There is some slight hairiness to the outer white parts of the flower, and the sepals flare slightly back if viewed from the side.

 That's about it for Rondeau's orchids for this year. But by next May, another one of the 19 species of orchids will appear. Can't wait!

Three 'hids': Orchids, Syrphids and Aphids

Last week I had the occasion to show Ontario Parks staff the Nodding Pogonia (Triphora trianthophora) at Rondeau Provincial Park. Given the fairly recent change in Ontario Parks (OP) staff, none of them had ever seen the orchid. And given the orchid's official Endangered status, it was important for OP staff to see it first hand, and have a greater appreciation for the challenges in understanding and ultimately managing for this orchid. Many readers will know that it is a favourite species of mine. I have been observing the species annually for almost 45 years, including having study plots set up in one of the main areas for over 30 years.

This is what we hoped to see, although it is a little late in the season for it to be in its prime.
 We did see a few plants that had drooping flowers, indicating they were in bloom a day or two earlier. But since each flower only lasts for a single day, and all the ones that are ready to open up do so on the same day, the chances of seeing them in flower is limited. We did see plants that had bloomed earlier in the season progressing nicely and forming seed capsules so that is encouraging. A couple of years ago it was so dry that the few flowers that may have opened (and there was no concrete evidence that any did) did not produce any seed capsules at all, which is not good for a species that is endangered and with its entire known Canadian population limited to Rondeau!

The survey of 2017 resulted in only 51 plants being counted, although there is at least one other location in the park which likely had a few individuals. However that location is even more remote, and seldom looked at.

While we were at the Triphora site, we came across some great examples of the Beech Blight Aphid, a.k.a. Boogie Woogie Aphid.



The latter name is due to its action when a branch is bumped or it otherwise feels threatened. They all make themselves a little bigger with their rear end stuck higher, waving a thread-like feature of their anatomy. Supposedly this collective behaviour might scare away any birds looking for a meal along the branches.

After leaving the Triphora site, I took the OP staff to the site of another orchid. It is Autumn Coralroot (Corallorhiza odontorhiza). It is tiny as well, although not endangered. This first photo shows what it might look like from a metre or so away.
 Obviously it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but when you get down on hands and knees and look closely, it is attractive. These next two photos show some relatively open flowers. This species is also known to self-pollinate, and sometimes the flowers don't open at all.

 Once pollinated, the flowers and developing seed capsules droop even more, before eventually becoming upright. The capsules will split open in several spots, allowing the extremely light seeds to be transported by even gentle breezes to a location potentially suitable for them.

I also took a bit of time on a recent visit to check out some of the goldenrod, where late season pollinating insects abound. There were the usual wasps and flies. On this occasion I was checking out the Syrphid flies, also known as hover flies or flower flies. The black and yellow patterns are attractive, and help identify them to species. Due to the great number of Syrphids, I posted some of the images on BugGuide, an on-line database designed for people across North America to post images and have them identified. In spite of some of the varied reference books I have at home, the number of insects one will come across is huge, and this on-line database is immensely useful. Here are three Syrphids species that I photographed, although when I initially photographed them, I thought there might have been more than three species. I was not aware of the different patterns between males and females of the species.
